Christmas in Guatemala
Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

The Kane Team took a second trip to Guatemala this December to install a second digital x-ray system at Salud Y Bienestar Clinica Municipal in Guatemala City. This project was under the direction of World Health Imaging, Telemedicine, and Informatics Alliance (WHITIA) and the Rotary. This clinic, part of the City Hall health clinic, will serve the urban underprivileged population with a CR digital x-ray system and high resolution monitors in 2 consultation rooms. The clinic will eventually be able to send images to radiologists in the US for reading once that connection is established. On a grander scale, the Salud Y Bienestar installation (in conjunction with Hospital Infantil’s system we installed in October) may now serve as a pilot site for additional installations in Guatemala.
Our partners in Guatemala are currently working a potential project that may yield a network of digital x-ray and telemedicine installations in the country. Kane X-ray will consider what our role will be in this exciting project, but it has been an incredible privilege and joy to serve with our partners in this project and especially on behalf of the people of Guatemala.
The original Christmas story is one of poverty, despair, and violence – and our friends in Guatemala have unfortunately experienced all of these elements in more than their share. But the people I have encountered in Guatemala also radiate other sides of the Christmas story – faith, hope, and love. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Fratti and their family and staff for exhibiting sacrificial love. Thank you to Jorge and Julio and your teams for exhibiting unending hope. And thank you to little Jessica, her sister and friends for reminding me about child-like faith. Merry Christmas Guatemala!

Guatemala Digital X-ray Installation!

First digital x-ray installation in Guatemala a success

It’s my pleasure to share with you the Kane X-ray team was able to complete the installation of a new digital x-ray system for Dr. Gustavo Castaneda Children’s Hospital in Rio Hondo Guatemala!
During the second weekend in October Chris Leonard, my wife Stephanie (a surgical nurse), and I traveled to Guatemala and met up with the hospital’s founders Ana and Gustavo Fratti. Our team spent 3 days at the hospital setting up the equipment and training the staff on use and maintenance. When the first x-ray was taken on Saturday evening the whole staff and the Fratti family celebrated. Since the installation had been delayed for almost three months (due to Customs “inspections”) there had been serious concern that a podiatric team coming in November to the hospital would have to cancel their trip if x-ray was not available. The first x-ray meant the team could still come and serve the surrounding communities of Rio Hondo – a “just in time” installation.
Our first patient was an adorable 3 year old girl who had trouble walking – when we saw her, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The x-rays were taken by the hospital’s technician, saved to the PACS server, and images sent state-side via the web to the American podiatrist coming in November. These images, along with others taken that day of other patients, helped the podiatry team plan for their upcoming surgeries and hopefully in a few weeks these patients will be able to walk without pain or inhibition. That cute little 3 year old now has a level of care being provided that wasn’t available her entire life until now.
The entire team at Kane X-ray is humbled and grateful to be involved in this project. Thanks to all who donated time and resources to make this project a success. Special thanks to Medstrat PACS, Shielding International, Techno-Aide, Soyee, and WHITIA for donating over $60,000 in imaging equipment and accessories. And finally special recognition and thanks must be made to Ana and Gustavo Fratti who have given themselves to their people and founded the Children’s Hospital out of their own resources, passion, and faith – God’s hand is definitely guiding your mission. It was a privilege to serve you in your mission to improve the quality of life and equality of care in your community.
