Book Recommendation: FREE: The Future of A Radical Price

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

“There’s no such thing as a free cat.”  That was my father-in-law’s advice when my wife and I (Jake) adopted our cat 2 years ago.  I could tell by his chuckle he was a long time veteran of “FREE” cats and knew I had been duped.   As predicted, our “FREE” cat cost us $500 in veterinary bills just a few months later when she swallowed a string.

FREE by Chris Anderson challenged me to go beyond the psychology of free being “too good to be true” and recognize that cross-subsidizing a product could actually decrease barriers to entry.  We’ve used this approach to launch our Go Digital for FREE! Program to help single doctor and low volume practices convert to digital.  We found we could leverage our Service4Life program in a unique way to make a new digital x-ray system – FREE.

NOTE: Beyond cross-subsidy, Chris points out information in a digital era can actually be free – using the examples of Wikipedia and YouTube.  I found this point revolutionary and will be expanding on it in future posts.  In the meantime, enjoy Chris’ book.

Free Digital X-ray System! – New Program Breaks Price Barrier

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

April 21, 2009 – The price barrier to going digital may have been broken this week when Kane X-ray announced its new Go Digital for Free! Program.  “It’s a major announcement.  We’re really hoping this effort will allow a large number of our customers who have been hesitant to convert to digital to jump in” said Jake Thompson, Kane’s CEO.

The Go Digital for Free! Program helps single doctor or low volume clinics upgrade to digital for free.  “Too good to be true right?” asked Thompson.  “The program leverages the tremendous value of our Service4Life1 service program and discounts that value toward the purchase price of a new Fujfilm FCR Prima CR Digital system, therefore making it essentially free.”

Besides the Free offer, this program also allows higher volume practices to upgrade to the faster Fujfilm FCR XC2 system for under $10,000 or upgrade to Direct DR for a fraction of the price.  David Kulick, Kane’s Sales Director, commented, “We’ve received a very positive response.  In this economy, this program has already helped several clients go digital at a price they can afford – free.”

1Service4Life is Kane’s remarkable service warranty program that covers all tech support and onsite repair service for the expected useful life of equipment.
